Angioplasty And Vascular Stents

During the angiogram procedure and x-ray dye is injected through the catheter in order to allow coronary arteries to show on x-ray. The angiogram would show where the blockages are. Angioplasty or stenting may be done right away. if needed.

Angioplasty is used to restore normal blood flow when a vein or artery is too narrow or blocked. It is normally done in an interventional radiology suite rather than operating room.

Angioplasty with or without vascular stenting, uses a balloon-tipped catheter to open a blocked blood vessel and improve blood flow.

The doctor uses medical imaging (e.g. x-ray fluoroscopy) to guide the catheter to the blockage. The balloon is inflated to open the vessel and compress the plaque against the walls of the vessel, widening the channel. This will improve blood flow. It may be done with or without a metal mesh tube called a stent. The stent is left inside after the procedure is completed and remains there forever to help keep the blood vessel it open.

An angiogram is then done to confirm that the artery has been opened, improving blood flow. The procedure of angioplasty is minimally invasive and usually does not require general anesthesia.

Cardiac catheterization

Cardiac catheterization (cardiac cath or heart cath) is a procedure to examine how well the patient heart is working. It is a special study of the heart and the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle. A thin, hollow tube called a catheter is inserted into a large blood vessel that leads to his heart.

This allows the doctor to gather information about the coronary arteries and the structure and function of the heart. It’s also the first step in certain procedures to improve heart function.

Once the catheter is in place, pressures in the heart are measured. An x-ray angiogram (motion picture x-ray) of the heart and blood vessels is taken. This is done while injecting an iodinated colorless "dye" or contrast material through the catheter. An angiogram of the coronary arteries is obtained by injecting the contrast material into the opening of a coronary artery.

Cardiac cath can:
■Show whether the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle are narrowed or blocked.
■Show whether the heart is pumping normally and blood is flowing properly through the heart.
■Help your doctor to form a treatment plan based on test results.
■Make treatment of certain heart problems possible.
■Rule out certain heart problems.

Angiogram

An angiogram is an X-ray movie that’s taken while special fluid (called contrast) that’s visible by X-ray is injected into a cardiac chamber or major blood vessel.

Angiograms are part of a general group of procedures known as heart (cardiac) catheterizations. Cardiac catheterization procedures can both diagnose and treat heart and blood vessel conditions.

An injection of 5–12 mL of radiographic contrast solution containing iodine, which is easily visualized with X-ray images, visualizes the coronary tree, delineates its branching pattern, and outlines the inner diameter of a coronary artery. Both the right and left coronary artery are injected multiple times after changing the position of the X-ray system to visualize the coronary tree from different perspectives. If necessary, doctor can open clogged heart arteries (angioplasty) during coronary angiogram.

An angiogram is also called a peripheral angioplasty or balloon angioplasty. An angioplasty may be done with an angiogram if the patient has narrowed blood vessels. With this procedure, a balloon on the end of the catheter will be used to open up the blood vessel to improve blood flow.

The first human cardiac catheterization was performed in 1929, when the German phy-sician Dr. Werner Forssmann inserted a plastic tube in his cubital vein and guided it to the right chamber of the heart. He took an X-ray to prove his success and published it on 5 Nov 1929 with the title “Über die Sondierung des rechten Herzens” (About probing of the right heart).
