The term cardiovascular diseases broadly encompasses several conditions to the heart and blood vessels, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, peripheral artery disease, stroke, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, and congenital heart disease.

The common factor in all types of cardiovascular disease, CVD is the loss of the natural elasticity of the arteries a condition referred to as atherosclerosis.

Atherothrombotic CVD primarily coronary heart disease, and stroke, is the principally contributor to the global burden of mortality and disability.

The heart and circulatory system together make up cardiovascular system, which accomplishes the complex function of distribution oxygen and other nutrients to body cells, as well as carrying away carbon dioxide and other waste products of cellular function for elimination.

Cardiovascular risk should be estimated in people with a family history of premature cardiovascular disease or with symptoms suggestive of cardiovascular disease.
