Carotid artery disease symptoms

The carotid arteries are major blood vessels that provide human brain’s blood supply. Carotid artery disease occurs when fatty deposits (plaques) clog the blood vessels that deliver blood to the brain and head (carotid arteries). This is where thinking, speech, personality, and sensory and motor functions reside.

Carotid artery stenosis, also called carotid artery disease, is a condition that can lead to stroke. As the condition advances, the most common first sign of carotid artery disease may be a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also called a mini-stroke. For some people, a stroke is the first sign of any problem.

A TIA occurs when there is low blood flow or a plaque briefly blocks an artery that supplies blood to the brain. the person at a higher risk of stroke. With a TIA, the person may have the same symptoms as he would have for a stroke. It usually lasts a few minutes to an hour. Symptoms go away entirely within 24 hours, with complete recovery.

Signs and symptoms of a stroke or TIA include:
*Numbness or loss of feeling in the face or in an arm or leg
*Difficulty speaking (called aphasia) and understanding
*Sudden loss of vision, blurred vision, or difficulty in seeing out of one or both eyes
*Sudden dizziness or loss of balance
*Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

The symptoms of a TIA and stroke are the same. A stroke is loss of blood flow (ischemia) to the brain that continues long enough to cause permanent brain damage.
